A touching story, Louise. Always a pleasure to read what you write but I am particularly fond of stories about your dog — so timely for me since our Pooh left almost three months ago.

We welcome her ghost here, know she is here. By our front door there is a wooden plaque with several small hooks to hang keys. We use two for dog leashes. After Pooh passed, my husband put her collar on one of the other hooks. Now, when he reaches for our Pekingese’s leash, he touches Pooh’s collar and says: Come on with us, little Pooh Bear, let’s go for a walk.

Pooh would always race from the living room, often running over Chanelito, our Peke. My husband called the way she bowled over our smaller dog Jumanjing him, after the Robin Williams’ movie Jumanji. So, as he invites the ghostly Pooh on walks, he always adds: And, don’t Jumanji Chanelito!

He swears he feels her presence on their walks.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
