African American women around here used to get all gussied-up for church, wearing some very wild hats, but I don't see that as much anymore. But, I do have to say that men of color dress much better for church than white men do. Almost all of them have on suits, many wear 3-piece suits even in the heat of summer. You rarely see men in "white" churches wearing suits - maybe, but no always, the minister and the deacons.

I love hats although mine are not elaborate. I mostly wear them in the winter. Summer hats, even those made of straw with lots of ventilation, make my head too hot. You'd think the shade they provide would be cooling but not for me.
