Ah, but divorce is a complicated and tricky situation. I was closer to my former husband’s family than he was and closer to them than to my own blood family. His brother’s wives were my best friends. But, as the saying goes, blood is thicker than water. Even though many of his kin couldn’t understand how I lived with him, I was the outcast when I finally had enough and left. Attitudes change when everyone feels the necessity of choosing a side, even when choosing sides is not a necessity. We still live in tribes and the tribe trumps everything else.
