As one of the oldies here, I have evolved to writing with a strong slant to the over-fifty group. Not an intentional evolution, just seemed to happen. I was encouraged in that direction by the thoughtful and grateful responses to my more age-related pieces. Definitely a demographic that isn’t getting much attention on Medium. I find my ideas are more often ones that would appeal to the older crowd. I avoid most of the how-to-be-the-best and how-to-accomplish-more articles because I don’t care about being the best and knowing the most because, with age, many of us learn that no one is the best and no one knows the most and if they are or if they do, who cares? The definition of accomplishment seems to change with age. What I want to read is how your heart heals after a lifetime of disappointments, what you treasure when you are closer to sunset than sunrise, how you age gracefully and love fully, and how you experience loss without feeling lost. Speak to me of your heart and your soul, not your bank account and resume. Let me know that the years have made you at least slightly wiser, softer, and braver and that you learned on your journey to appreciate tears and giggles and hugs and happiness. And, most important of all, share the value of having just enough not to need more.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
