At my first retail job, the one where I worked in stock, I put merchandise out in the men's & boy's departments. Shoppers there were less crazy at Christmas than those in other departments. Although it wasn't my responsibility to sell, I often helped customers and sealed the deal on many sales. The assistant manager of that department like me a lot and we worked on displays together - again, not really part of my job but certainly more creative than everything else I did. The assistant manager never liked any of the stock crew until me, so my supervisor gladly let him commandeer me for display setups.

I also was chosen to help in the sign shop during the holidays and when there were big sales. The sign shop artist and I became good friends and I loved working with her and creating the signs. That was a great deal of fun.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
