Common Cat’s Throne

A poem of repurposing

Gifted from the former owner,
stored in the room for keeping
what is rarely used or needed,
nestled between the fake Christmas tree,
bags of potting soil and charcoal —
a ladder, sturdy but paint-splattered,
put into service for changing light bulbs
too high for chair-standing,
used and rested for a moment on the porch,
before the screened windows,
next to the patio door,
a temporary location,
a few seconds only,
while obtaining access to that room for
keeping what is rarely used or needed —
returning to find the paint-splattered steps
commandeered by the curious tiger cat,
refusing to leave, to abdicate his throne,
obviously there for his comfort,
a place to rest after royal duties,
a place to observe his kingdom,
and so the paint-splattered steps
stayed at the behest of a prince,
a ladder repurposed to a throne,
as it was always meant to be.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
