Excellent story, Jim. I have a similar story with a very different outcome.

When same-sex marriage passed, a paralegal in my client’s law firm was bitching about the new legal language needed to properly refer to married same-sex couples. She acted as though the small change in phrases was a tremendous burden. Her complaining resurfaced each time she had a real estate contract in which one of the parties was a same-sex couple. Sick of her whining, I asked why she was so annoyed by such a small change in legal language and that’s when she admitted it was the law that made her angry because “Men shouldn’t marry men and women shouldn’t marry women. It’s just wrong.”

I asked how she would feel if one of her two grown, heterosexual sons had been gay.

“That would never happen,” she replied.

“But, what if it did?” I asked.

Her answer was, “I guess I’d have one less son.”

Until that moment, I had a casual friendship with that woman. It ended right then.
