Fabulous, Anneyé Blanco! As a white American in a family of Hispanics, I understand your frustration, passion, and plea for understanding. I chuckled at your mention of pronoun confusion — my Argentinian husband, who has been in the USA since the 60’s, still struggles with English pronouns and I consider that to be part of his charm.

Until my white life became surrounded by brown, I didn’t truly understand how difficult English is to learn. I tried to learn Spanish, one of the easiest languages, and failed miserably, leaving me to feel great compassion for anyone attempting to learn a new language, particularly a confusing and fickle one like English. I have great admiration for all who have a different mother tongue but can make themselves understood in English, even with mixed-up pronouns 😉! And, I am envious of all who can communicate in more than one language.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
