My first day “off” since Christmas Day. No business work for me, but plenty of work nonetheless. While busy with a multitude of household chores that haven’t been done or have not been done well since Christmas, I tracked a line of potentially dangerous spring storms making their way across the Gulf toward us. Portions of the weather system deteriorated before arriving, and some of the worst parts went north and south of us, leaving our afternoon with gusty winds and spotty showers. We were fortunate that the storms avoided us, but so did the deluge of rain we need so badly.

As the grandkids and I scrubbed, dusted, vacuumed and mopped, I began identifying objects that need to be unleashed in preparation of our moves — the move of my daughter and grandchildren to their apartment and the hopeful move of my husband and myself to a condo we want to purchase. So many trinkets, mementos, dishes, ceramics, and pictures were placed with me when my stepmother passed that I cannot possibly take them all to a smaller place. Choosing what to keep, what to pass on, what to donate, and what to discard was heart-wrenching, presenting many moments of melancholy — moments that matched the moody weather outside. And, this was just the start of the culling process. . .
