First, Ashley, I am a fan of Barbara Ehrenreich, although I haven’t yet read this book by her. Second, I loved your review. Third, I have written about my experiences with the Law of Attraction and positive thinking.
I am, by nature, more a pessimist than an optimist. Well, let me revise that. I was born an extreme optimist. My nickname until my early 20s was Pollyanna. Life transformed me into a pessimist.
In a very low and desperate time in my life, when money was so tight it gasped for breath, I happened to meet several people who were into the Law of Attraction, made popular at the time by the book, The Secret. Soon, I was absorbing every word I could about this positive-thinking and life-creating belief, in hopes, it would work for me. It didn’t. I wrote about that here:
After giving up on the Law of Attraction, I reluctantly moved through life like driftwood, feeling that I possessed little or no ability to affect where I flowed. Then, through a series of synchronistic events — at least, that is how I viewed them — major positive changes occurred in my life. I wrote about that here:
I am preparing to write another piece about creating the life you want and it’s definitely more on the you can’t really than the yes you can side. Due to some not-welcome and unavoidable changes in my life last year, I’ve been forced to adjust how I view life so I can get through it with minimal damage.
So, your book review came at the perfect time! I will definitely give it a read.
