For me, Jim, when he uttered "faggot", I was trying to figure out who he was talking to. I mean, who uses that expression as a general swear word? Damn, hell, f--k, or a dozen others fit the scenario better, though still would be very low class utterances for a world-renown athlete. If you have to be crass, use s cuss word that isn't typically used to demonize people.
So, that leads to my question as to why he chose THAT word over others that would be more applicable to the situation. To me, his choice of THAT word speaks volumes about who he is. He needs to do some personal excavation work if he thinks that's not who he is.
Someone who is not homophobic would never use that word as a substitute for a common cursing expression - NEVER. What if he uttered the N-word instead? There would have been more outrage. Both words deserve equal condemnation. Both demonize and demoralize groups of people. Both are unacceptable in any situation anywhere. Both cannot be erased with a simple apology.
Your piece reminded me of a childhood experience. I will work on writing a story about it and submit it to you.
