Gainesville. About 75 miles southwest of St. Augustine — more west than south. I haven’t seen that documentary but have, of course, visited St. Augustine many times. The historical city is on the St. John’s River but once you cross over the river and go a little further east, you reach the Atlantic Ocean and some great beaches. Those beaches are the ones most frequented by people from my area.
I used to go on a “girls’ beach trip” there every year with some friends. We stayed in the oceanfront condo of the boss of one in my group. Everywhere we went there, we saw people we knew from Gainesville!
Benito and I love the historical city. That used to be our favorite getaway spot until we discovered Mount Dora. Mount Dora is less busy, quieter, and much less expensive. We can stay 5 nights in Mount Dora for the same price as 2 nights in St. Augustine! Still, we like to go there every couple of years.
I did not know, and am surprised to learn, that it is a liberal community. Perhaps because of all the transplants from other places. Most of Florida is definitely NOT liberal. Our city is because of the influence of a major university. Otherwise, we are surrounded by Trump supporters.
