I do thank you for your service, James. But, even more, I thank you for your service now. For keeping us informed and for fighting ceaselessly for justice, equality, and compassion. Most wars and battles of wars are not fought with guns, fighter jets, bombs, or other means of destruction. Most are fought with words, marches, journalism, legal battles, and boots on the ground in the form of protesting civilians.
I don’t ask God or whomever to bless our troops or our country. I ask that we, those who have more than others, honor our God, religion, spiritual beliefs, and humanity by fighting for those who have less or have nothing, for those with no voice and no hope, for those who are excluded, vilified, and abused for who they are, for simply existing.
We all serve. But who and what do we serve? Every. Day.
