I had a friend who lived on a long, rural road outside of Gettysburg. She and her husband and her brother and his wife, who lived next door (well, several acres away), were the only non-Amish on the road. The Amish may not drive motorized vehicles themselves but they had no problem asking my friend to give them a ride to town! More than once she rushed Amish women in labor to the hospital (aren't hospitals full of "modern technology"?)
All their farms had electrical power but the men were only allowed to use it for mechanized milking machines for their cows and the women could turn it on to clean house when they were hosting church services.
But, this is my favorite. My friend had a large garden and froze lots of vegetables and berries for the winter. When her Amish neighbors found out she had an very large freezer in her basement, they rented space for their garden goodies. In fact, my friend bought two even larger commercial-size freezers to accommodate her Amish neighbors. She made enough money renting freezer space to cover the purchases and the annual electricity costs for all the freezers and still had a cash profit!
Can we say hypocrisy??
