I have been there, more times than I can count. Platitudes make the shadows darker, scarier for they magnify, or so it seems, that you are different than everyone else. Being told of someone else’s suffering to ease mine always increased mine. Now I suffered for the other person or people AND myself. Sometimes holding is all you can offer someone who is suffering from sadness — holding the person, holding a hand, holding a space, holding your tongue.
