I love this, Gordie Jackson! Actually, I know that hymn from my long-ago Southern Baptist days that followed my Catholic upbringing. In spite of my current disdain for religion, I still enjoy a good gospel song or hymn.
I know for a fact that our country music is rooted in the Scotch-Irish songs. My step-mother was an avid country music fan, dragging myself and my sister to concerts — not big stars but the less-well-known ones that would tour through New England and Canada. Canadians are also very fond of country music. So many of their folk tunes remind me of older country songs. The modern cowboy-country is less my style.
