I once had a temp job working for a company who handled collections for other companies. I hated that job sooooo much. My department handled collections for a tractor trailer company - you know, the big rigs that truckers drive. It was during the 70s recession and times were hard for truckers. I hated calling those poor guys. Maybe they punked me, but their sad stories always seemed plausible and always made me feel like a cold-hearted a-hole for calling them about truck payments.

I desperately needed a permanent job but when I was offered one there, with good wages and benefits, I declined. It was just too hard on my heart.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
