I was a Nancy Drew reader myself. We lived in a very rural area — no libraries other than the school ones which were closed during summer break. My father was an avid reader and disappointed when my older sisters were not. When I showed an interest in reading, he encouraged me by buying me a box of books at the end of the school year to last me through the summer. Each Christmas, he bought me any 12 books I chose. He wasn’t a good dad in many ways, but I will always be grateful that he nurtured my love of reading.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
