I was assigned that book to read for a high school sociology class. I remember thinking: Why not just ask black people? Surely, a black person writing a book about being black would be more telling, have more depth,and take into consideration family, childhood, traditions, and ancestory.

Perhaps the book was interesting but I didn’t consider it to have significant insight on being black. In fact, it only gave insight on being a white person pretending to be black.
