Even as a child, I was greatly disturbed by the Christian belief that a deathbed request for forgiveness from God, not those wronged, can erase a lifetime of debauchery, evil deeds, and crimes against the earth. Our duty is to the here and now, to the earth that sustains us, and to those with whom we travel this path — not to some deity.

Lovingkindness is the answer.
