Ivy, did you know that a single squirrel caches about 10,000 nuts each year, or about 50 to 100 pounds? Actually, they are very good at remembering the location of their buried nuts, considering the huge number that they cache. Estimates are only about 30% are forgotten. And, since squirrels quality-check their nuts before burying, the nuts are healthy and have a good chance of sprouting into seedling trees. We'd have far fewer trees if not for our bushy-tailed friends!
