Kids scam these systems! Let them read books they want to read. I would imagine a school library doesn’t have anything too vulgar or too frightening for a kid any age to read. Besides, with what they see on TV, in the movies, and online, nothing shocks kids over the age of 8 anymore.

My daughter is refusing to let my almost 12-year-old grandson read a book recommended for young teens because it has some “bad” words. He wants to read it so badly. I actually started reading it to both he and his sister 3 years ago but never finished. At the time, I was cleaning up the words and some of the conversations that were not appropriate for their then ages of 9 and 7, but they loved the real-life stories in the book. I know what’s in it and there is nothing that he can’t handle at the age of 12. But, sigh, the answer from my daughter was no when he asked me to mail the book.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
