Knitting was difficult for me. I pulled out so many stitches and started over so many times! Hated it. But, crocheting was different. Easier. Relaxing. Satisfying. I still love it and wish my hands could do more of it.

But, really, sewing was the very worst. My stepmother tried to teach me but I was hopeless. None of it made sense to me — the patterns, the cutting material, the horrendous sewing machine. My heart is racing writing about it!

But, even the difficult knitting gave me a connection to my femininity. Not having a mother left me anchorless. I grew up not knowing so many things other girls knew.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
