Lorraine Heth, I, too, thought the coming together with like minds would be strengthening, comforting, and encouraging, but that has, sadly, not been my experience. Except for a few die-hard political enthusiasts who feed on political drama and challenges, the rest of us seem to depress and discourage one another. My thoughts are dark enough without joining them with others that are equally dark or darker. Of course, resistance requires group participation but whatever the activity, I am depleted and dispirited afterwards. Some in my circles are buoyed by the gatherings — for a short while, until the next tweet or breaking news report — then they fall to earth with a thud, feeling even worse than before. It’s accumulative. The negativity, hostility, lack of integrity and decency, immorality, hatred, and the lies upon lies upon lies build up like one layer of hives on top of another layer on top of another.
I only find a smidgen of relief in nature, or reading and writing, and I drown myself in work to escape it all.
