Man, would I love to be only 5 hours away from my grandchildren! My distance is over 1,200 miles and almost 19 hours driving. Like you Australians, we Americans don’t think much of driving 5 hours but 19 is too much. Also, I am not a fan of air travel — not afraid of flying just hate all the hassles and fear the violence and unreasonableness that seem to be rampant on planes these days. Plus, my husband’s blood pressure skyrockets on flights. He and I usually go to New Jersey/New York City once a year and we travel by train. Train travel in the U.S. is pathetic though, especially here in the South. There are no direct routes to where my daughter and grandchildren are. So a very long trip would be much longer with having to change trains along the route.
