Many years ago, a friend of mine and her husband and her brother and his wife were the only non-Amish living on their 5-mile rural road outside of Gettysburg. I was amazed at what the Amish were allowed and not allowed to do. For example, they can ride in a car a non-Amish owns but can't own a car themselves. All their homes had electricity but it was only used to clean and cook for church services, which are held in private homes, or for some farm chores like milking the cows. My friend's neighbor could not own freezers because they required electricity but they would rent space in my friend's freezer!

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
