Maybe the United States freight train system is considered one of the best in the world, and I question that, but our passenger train system is antiquated and neglected.
My husband and I take Amtrak to New Jersey every year and, although I prefer train travel to flying, it is decades behind passenger trains in other parts of the world. Our rail system is in poor shape, there are not enough tracks, rail stations are inadequate, trains are old and inefficient, and long travel delays are common. Trump is trying to eliminate government subsidies for Amtrak which would completely destroy our only major passenger train line.
Our guest from China rides high speed trains regularly in her country, traveling at speeds more than twice as fast as the Amtrak train we take from Florida to New Jersey and her trains have high-speed internet, television, deluxe meal cars, and other amenities American train travelers dream of.
How sad that the richest country in the world has one of the worst train systems!
