My exact experience, Brett! I have similar but less intense experiences in two neighborhoods our city. One is upper-middle-class and the other upper-class with well-maintained homes ranging from 2,500 sq ft to 7,000 sq ft. The lawns are green and lush, usually professionally landscaped. But, I feel a sense of dread in both places. I’ve visited 2 homes in each neighborhood and the anxiety lessens inside the homes but doesn’t go away completely, returning in full force when I step outside the home. I feel sad more than fearful but also anxious as though I’m being watched.

A look into the history books revealed that one of the areas was the campground for a tribe of Native Americans, most of whom were slaughted by white settlers. The other was a plantation maintained by a large group of slaves ruled by a ruthless owner and his foreman. Coincidence? I think not.

I have another very personal “ghost” story but now realize it would make a great stand-alone Medium piece! Will tag you when I write it!

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
