My husband, adopted daughter and grandchildren are Hispanic — respectively, Argentinian, Honduran, and Honduran/Puerto Rican . Their tradition, and now mine, is to have a party Christmas Eve and to perhaps go visiting family and friends. Some gifts are opened at midnight and others, especially for young children who didn’t make it to midnight, are opened whenever everyone wakes up Christmas morning. Christmas Day is spent resting, playing, eating and more visiting. Our tree and decorations remain in place through January 6th. More gifts are given, particularly to children, on the 6th. Of course, the number of gifts given on the two days are fewer than what most “American” children receive in one day and often the January 6th presents are foods like special fruits, cakes, and candies. So, the January 6th (Three Kings Day) gift-giving is multi-cultural.
