My observation after nearly 64 years of life is that voracious readers of diverse subjects rarely become dogmatic in their religious beliefs. I believe reading, even more so than advanced education, is what keeps us from living restricted, unimaginative, biased lives. Too often children are indoctrinated to accept rigid beliefs regarding life, death, and the world. Without exposure to the outside world through reading, they are doomed to repeat the lives of their parents and grandparents.

After many years being removed from my high school classmates, we reconnected on Facebook. All who were reluctant readers as a children had become small-minded, racist, misogynistic Trump supporters. EVERY SINGLE ONE. I am sure this is not the case for all such people but I venture it is the case more often than not. I see the same with my neighbors and co-workers. Those who read diverse books and who read often do not and cannot support someone like Trump, nor are they dogmatic in their religious beliefs.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
