My path was similar. I dreamed of being a writer and was encouraged by many but how to survive financially was too much for me to overcome. Unable to complete my education and unsure of what major to choose, I went to work, eventually settling in bookkeeping and starting my own bookkeeping service when I was 43. The business has served me well but now, at 64, I am tired of making rich people richer, tired of the IRS and all its arbitrary deadlines, and tired of working 60 hours a week during much of the year. I can’t afford to retire in the near future but don’t want to continue along this path for much longer.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
