Oh, my! In some ways, I think the belching is worse because it’s usually somewhat controllable, which is not always the case with the other bodily sound.

In my childhood home, everyone avoided making gassy sounds from either end. I was appalled when I experienced “body concerts” out in the world, particularly around adults in the deep rural South where “gas music” was greeted with laughter and jokes, making it all the more appealing to share with an audience. I knew children and teenagers sometimes considered gassy sounds to be entertaining but it was a stage to be outgrown. How shocked I was to be around adults who made no attempt to control or hide their gas emissions!

Ben and I are the same about this, Jack and Kathy, doing our best to not expose one another to such sounds and smells.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
