Oh, my, Paul, what a story! Sorry for the demise of your camera equipment but happy that you were able to return to civilization with relatively minor injuries.

I don’t venture to remote areas but I do worry about injury when photographing in NYC. I walk with my head up, barely looking down or around, as I navigate by instinct, I guess, through the hordes of people and across lanes of traffic, up and down curbs and around manholes, the homeless, and the food vendors. My husband tries to keep an eye on me but we are often separated by the crowds. I am damn lucky that I haven’t fallen, although I once got so badly bumped by a very large man that I injured my back and limped with great pain the rest of our visit. In my defense, I was simply walking at the time, camera in bag on my shoulder, face forward. The man plowed over me like a John Deere. They say most injuries happen at home but that one was definitely the result of leaving home, as was yours!
