Oh, Sabana, I am so honored by this! First, I want to thank you for your original interest in Weeds & Wildflowers and the pieces you've submitted. It pleases me to know that I was helpful getting you started on Medium.
Please feel free to write short stories, humor, whatever you want. I've only refused 3 submissions in 18 months - one was disparaging to women and 2 were rather gory, horror stories that were very well written but I didn't feel they belonged here.
This not a poetry publication, although I receive a lot of poetry. And, despite the name, it's not a publication only about nature.
I've published long stories, too, but, honestly, they don't seem to do as well here. I think other publications have followers who are more welcoming to longer pieces. Short stories, essays, and poetry do best here. But, I don't limit what I publish to particular writing forms.
My husband, who writes sporadically, shares his immigrant stories, as have others. Some post travel stories here. One writer does advice pieces. I also have published humorous stories and many photography essays. Again, please feel free to write what you want. If, for some reason, I don't think it's appropriate, I will kindly explain why and even suggest other publications that may be a better fit.
When I started Weeds & Wildflowers, I wasn't looking for perfection. I remember how awkward and confused I felt when I started on Medium. My goal is to help eliminate those negative feelings for writers. I want to encourage, not criticize.
Many writers here speak/write English as a second or third language. Although, I make minor corrections from time-to-time, I reach out before making large adjustments. And, I often leave words/phrases that may not be perfect English because I feel they add to the writer's personal story. My husband is from Argentina and has been in this country for more than 40 years and he still has a strong accent and makes occasional mistakes when he speaks and writes English. I see those "mistakes" as part of him and his experience. I feel the same about the writers here. Your birth language helps to form you. Why would anyone want to take that away?
I want Weeds & Wildflowers to be a place where we can learn and grow together, providing support for one another along the way. I want writers and readers to feel welcome and appreciated here.
