Perfect haiku, A. Christine! Captures winter and night and the moon and the owl in lovely brevity.
Even here in Florida, when the expected high is 82 today, the owls are more active in the cooler nights. I like to sit on my porch as evening melts into night and hear the owls vocalizing in the woods across the lake.
Our old neighborhood was home to dozens of owls, probably there to dine on the rodents that ran the riverbed behind the homes across the street from us. Often the hoots and screeches of the owls would awaken me during the night. They were a raucous chorus!
Walking our dogs at night in that neighborhood was scary. A screech owl right above on a tree branch would let out a bloodcurdling scream, stopping any human heart in range! I prefer the owls in our current location — they generally stay in the woods a distance away and most seem to be great horned owls, rather than the frightening screech owls.
