Re-training programs are desperately needed. Coal and steel and similar industries are never returning. Eliminating pollution regulations won’t change that. There is work. Just in other areas and in other in other industries.
Our country has been through this before. It is tragic for those in the midst of the employment upheaval, but this isn’t the first time. Giving drips of blood to industries that are hemorrhaging will not help. And, gutting the programs that help those who are unemployed and need social services and financial assistance won’t help. We need to give support to the unemployed as they transition to other industries.
Not saying it will be easy under any circumstances. It will be immensely difficult. But, the job market has these great fluctuations every couple of generations (and that is likely to start happening more often) and our government needs to be proactive and prepare for the changes ahead. Unfortunately, the changes are called false news and those in power hide from the truth, rolling back protections that just worsen the situation. Education is the answer to so many social problems. Education, education, education.
