Day 27 of My Personal Challenge to Write a Poem Each Day in April
in Honor of National Poetry Month

Fire season in Florida
Some years, yes
Some years, no
This year, yes.

Skies drip silky tendrils of smoke,
Not thick, not heavy —
Lacy reminders that
Florida is burning —
Not here — yet,
But somewhere.

Remembering other times
Flames licking tops of pine trees,
Ashen acres of charred timber,
Black, gaunt sticks
Where trees once stood.
Dismal, brown and gray landscapes,
Once lush and green.

Fire season in Florida,
Where are the hurricanes
When you need them?

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
