So true, Rachel! I just had an hour+ conversation with my 10-year-old grandson about pets and our love for them and their love for us. His mother won’t allow him to have a dog — partially due to the expense, partially the responsibility, and mostly because she doesn’t like animals, particularly household pets. He is longing for a dog. Coming to my house each Saturday, allows him time to interact with my two dogs but they are old, and it’s not the same as a boy having his own dog. Today he asked, “When I’m 18, can I move in with you and finally have a dog of my own? I’ll be a big help because you will be old. Wouldn’t that be a good arrangement?”
I agreed it would be an excellent arrangement. He proceeded to plan that his dog will be a black lab mix or beagle mix rescue. If he adopts a female, she will be named Shelley and a male will be christened, Santiago. It was a touching conversation that also broke my heart because 8 years is too long for a boy to wait for his own dog.
