Such an inspirational story, Cora. Your personal back stories tied in with your new mission seamlessly.

Five years ago, we began the process of decluttering in preparation to move to a smaller home. We had three months from the time we signed the contract until our moving day. And, during most of that time, I was working 50+ hours a week and helping to raise two grandchildren! It was overwhelming but had to be done. I set aside 15 minutes every work day (I usually worked 6 days a week) to declutter a closet or a drawer or some other location of accumulated stuff. Just 15 minutes. It was doable. Nearly every night, once I got started, I went longer than the 15 minutes, often losing track of time. But, the idea that I was only committing to 15 minutes was what gave me the push to do something every night, even after a long day at work. On my one day off from work, I committed to 2 hours but usually did 4 to 6 hours.

It's finding a way to motivate yourself to start. And, whether it's a small amount of time or a small area to declutter, bite-sized pieces of time are the easiest way to tackle decluttering.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
