It was a tawny frogmouth: a classic Australian nocturnal bird with powerful frog-like beaks. It camouflages among deadwood and dead stubs with its prominent ear-patch, black and white mottling on back, breasts and wing. It positions its beak upright when threatened, with fiery eyes usually closed.
