The length of time since a loss doesn’t matter, Agnes. What happened 10 years ago can feel as recent as a month ago.

When my daughter left her husband and moved in with us, the children were 3 and one. I co-parented and helped her raise them for 7 years until she remarried and moved hundreds and hundreds of miles away. It will be two years at the end of this coming June since they left and already, I rarely hear from them. It’s like all the closeness we had for so very long has dissipated into the air. I can’t make sense of this. My world has been ripped apart.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
