Verdant and vibrant,
Stretching for the sky;
Majestic and mighty
To the human eye.

Concealed and covered
Is the war within,
Battles for space —
There is so little
And we are so much.

Crowded chaos,
Knurly knots of
Rambling roots,
Mingling, clustering,
Challenging claims
On soil below
And light above.

Twisting, tangling,
Creeping and crawling,
Ascending together,
Brawling like bandits —
We do not soar,
We suffocate
And strangulate,
Survival of the fittest.

But blinded by the beauty
You see only
Luxurious leaves
Voluptuous vines
Towering trees
Our secrets shrouded
In a mossy mantle of green.
