We are a bankrupt society that shrugs off its debts, as though they disappear into the night. My grandson, as my generation did in youth, swears he and others his age will make a difference, will pay up much of the debt we leave, and will accumulate good deeds in the bank for the generation that follows his. I've forgotten what such optimism feels like.
