When buying tomatoes in the grocery store, I always sniff them. Occasionally, I catch an aroma somewhat like a fresh tomato but, more often, store tomatoes smell like gasoline to me. Living in Florida, the ugly fruit tastes better theory works exceptionally well with oranges. Stay away from flawless, flashy oranges! And, as you wrote, the same criteria for good fruit and vegetables applies to people. Anything that looks too orange can’t be good — yes, I snuck in a political barb.
