Wow, Erika, you had one tough job. My stepdaughter worked with abused women for a couple of years but had to get out — couldn’t deal with a system that has no concept of how to help and protect these women or with the women who returned again to their abusers even when they had alternatives.
A friend and her family recently moved to Arizona for her husband’s job and they are appalled at the violence, drug abuse, and gang activity that is rampant even in the better communities. Safety is on her mind constantly. She describes Arizona as a mentally and emotionally exhausting place to live.
I admire you for taking on such draining work, trying to do what you could in a system that punishes more than aids.
